About
I am Marçal Morell, a digital designer in Gothenburg. I trained as an artist, moved here in 2013, and in 2014 I started working for myself. Since then I have built websites, shops, booking systems, brands and one chess app, mostly for small companies, associations and people running something of their own.

How I work
A fine arts degree is years of being handed nothing and asked to finish something anyway. You choose the idea, you find the method, you make it, and then you stand next to it while people say what they think. That is also what a one-person studio is, which is why the training has been more useful than it sounds.
Two daughters, so the working day has firm edges and I have got much better at finishing things. I play chess, which is where Bito chess came from. I teach kroki, which keeps my hand honest. I draw, I cook properly, and I take photographs that are not for anybody. None of it goes on an invoice, but it is where the eye comes from, and the eye is what you are actually hiring.
I am a designer who writes code rather than the other way round, but the work has stopped being brochures. Recent projects include a members area with subscriptions and room booking, a referral system for a dental clinic that had to hold patient data properly, trilingual sites, and a chess trainer of my own that runs on the phone.
I would rather have a few clients for a long time than many for a week. Several of the sites in the portfolio are ones I still look after, and where I can I teach the client to run their own site, because paying a designer to change an opening time is a bad arrangement for everyone.
A few dates

1987
Born on Christmas Eve
Born in Catalonia. As a child there was always paper around, and since then I have never stopped drawing.

2012
Fine arts, University of Barcelona
Esthetics, art history and art pedagogy, and the whole time not stopping drawing, painting and taking pictures.

2013
Moved to Sweden
A new country, a new language and a rewarding challenge.
2014
Started my own studio
I wanted to work on my own projects and help other people with theirs, and this was the way I found to do both.
2021
Gala
My first daughter. I became a father.
2024
Iris
My second daughter. Work got more organised very quickly.

2026
Bito chess
A chess trainer app I built on my own.
Now
Still going, and the work keeps getting better
Every year the projects are a bit bigger and a bit better than the last one. The one I am proudest of is usually the most recent.
People I learn from

Oana
My partner
An architect, and the best critic I have. There is no project of mine she has not improved by saying what was wrong with it.
Gala and Iris
My daughters
The best inspiration for life, art and design I could ask for. I learn something from them every day.

David Hockney
Artist
What is a picture, and how is one made. He has spent a lifetime on that question, between drawing and painting, and he is who I think of when I want to understand what an image is actually doing.

Alberto Giacometti
Sculptor
I was bored by art museums as a child, except once. I have a blurry memory of being taken to a Giacometti show, and of L’homme qui marche. It may have been the first step.

Egon Schiele
Artist
I got obsessed with his drawings and never quite got over it. The knowledge of the body in every single stroke. His line is still everywhere in illustration, whether or not people know whose it is.

Martin Parr
Photographer
I found him at university and he is probably the reason I picked up a camera seriously. The humour, and the way he points it straight at the contradictions nobody wants named.
